Ideas

I have been following the Macro Monday group on Flickr and the theme was “Water Play.” I was trying to figure out what I would shoot and post. The photo below came about when I was rinsing off crumbs on a styrofoam plate for my son. I walked back to the table and the beads of water droplets sparkled and caught my eye. Sometimes ideas come by accident.

Using the Sun

When I was young, I would hear my dad say “Let’s take some photos, it’s a nice bright sunny day.” None of the photos came out good because we were all squinting and we had weird shadows. Then as I started to learn about photography, I learned bright sunny days with the sun overhead and with no shade is not the ideal time for photos. Recently I started reading articles about photographers taking great photos in the bright sun and using the sunlight to their advantage. There are many blogs about it, just google it.

Below are a couple of photos from the Botanical Garden in Albuquerque, where I tried to use the sun above me to my advantage. I held the camera below the flowers and was able to compose using live view and the swivel screen on my Canon 60D.

White Background – Macro Monday

Snake Eyes

How to take a photo with a complete white background ? I tried with this die I got from Santa Ana Star Casino in Bernalillo, NM years ago. Here is a great tutorial link that shows other methods.

Check out the other beautiful photos members have submitted at the Macro Monday group

My set up was a Canon S5 with Raynox DCR250 Macro Lens. For the lighting I used a Sigma EF-530 to the left and I hand held a Yongnuo YN560  above my head to bounce some light off the right side to get rid of some of the harder shadows from the Sigma flash. Both flashes triggered by Yongnuo RF-603C.

Photo Friday

Tulip

Photo Friday has a new theme every Friday and people around the world participate. I have been trying to participate in my themes in order to help myself take different type of photos that I normally might not take.

This week’s (Mar 09) theme is floral.

Here is my entry. I took this the other day experimenting with natural light. I was trying to make the tulip glow by positioning it in some direct sunlight that will cause the inside of the tulip to light up.

Mysterious – Macro Monday

The Flickr group Macro Mondays‘ theme for March 5th: Mysterious

Looking around in the kitchen for something mysterious to take, maybe the pile of dirty dishes and the mystery would be how many days it’s been there <*SMACK!!!  from wife’s left hand*>.  I did several ideas. The first two photos I remembered Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho where they used chocolate syrup as blood in the black and white film, I decide to try that but I ended up submitting the last photo. I used a Raynox DCR250 on my Canon S5 and took a photo of a knife shot through a plastic sandwich bag to give it the blur. The bag was crunched up to reflect the kitchen ceiling lights.

Blue – Macro Monday

Blue Carnation

Macro Monday theme for Feb 27th: Blue

Finally came up with this shot below. I used a baby white carnation and had it in water with blue food coloring. I liked how the veins were very blue and the areas around it had a softer blue. Other photos by other people are here Flickr Macro Monday

Next week March 5th theme: Mysterious

Diptych Photography

What the heck is a diptych ?

A diptych is a photograph that uses two different or identical images side by side to form one single artistic statement. The two images can literally be in contact with each other, or separated by a border or frame.

1. two views of the same object
2. two things that have a recognizable relationship
3. two things related by any of the following: shape, color, texture, or size (or anything else…)

Diptych is the theme for Macro Mondays 01/30/12 on Flickr. Here is my entry.
